Marker Text

Stone County in the Civil War

As Arkansas seceded from the Union in 1861, Unionists formed a Peace Society at Sylamore, but most were arrested. Most Stone County men joined the Confederate army and served east of the Mississippi River, while others fought in Arkansas. Bands of bushwhackers plagued Stone County, and most military actions consisted of recruiting, raids and patrols. The few skirmishes fought in the county are commemorated by markers. Sylamore and Kickapoo Bottoms are marked 6 miles north of Mtn. View on Hwy. 5. The Buckhorn Tavern fight is marked 13 miles east on Hwy. 14.
