Montgomery County in the Civil War

Montgomery County men served in several Confederate units during the Civil War. The “Montgomery Hunters” (Co. F) and “Caddo Rifles” (Co. C) joined the 4th Arkansas Infantry in 1861. Co. I, 33rd Arkansas Infantry was raised at Caddo Gap in 1862, and Co. L, 7th Arkansas Cavalry was raised at Mount Ida in 1863. Montgomery County men also served in Union units from Arkansas and Kansas. Troops from both sides moved through the county from late 1863 to mid-1864 and at least 15 skirmishes were recorded here. Civil War veteran reunions were held until 1912.
