Marker Text
Engagement at St. Charles
Here on June 17, 1862 a Federal fleet of eight vessels attempted to force its way upstream past Confederate shore defenses commanded by Captain Joseph Fry. The Confederates disabled the Union gunboat Mound City with heavy casualties before their positions were overrun by troops of the Forty-sixth Indiana Volunteers. The cannon shot which put the Mound City out of action has been described as the most destructive single shot fired in the Civil War.
Erected by the Arkansas Civil War Centennial Commission – 1964
