St. Charles was the site of the "single deadliest shot of the Civil War" when
an artillery shell pierced the steam drum of the U.S.S. Mound City; 125
Union sailors died. A monument in downtown St. Charles commemorates the event,
which is interpreted at the St. Charles Museum.
